It's the 21st century, 2025 to be exact and precise. Diverse doctrines are sweeping across the Body of Christ by numerous teachers and preachers, and everyone is claiming they speak the truth. In the midst of these, what can we learn from history? One of the easiest ways to stay out of doctrinal error as a believer is to read Church History and take Historical Theology seriously. Church History vs Historical Theology Church History is not the same as Historical Theology, but they are very similar. Church History Church History, in simple terms, is the overall history of the church of Christ from inception till date. Historical Theology Historical Theology is the history of doctrines, that simply means you pick a doctrine and learn its history. This includes: Learning the view of the early church on that particular doctrine Checking whether it was accepted by the church as the truth over the centuries Or whether it has been rejected as heresy, especially by the early church, and so on. How Does This Help Us to Avoid Errors? The answer is quite straightforward. Every doctrine we teach now has been taught in the past, right from the first century. Every single one, including the one your pastor or favorite preacher on TV and Social Media said is new, is not new. They are newly renovated or reinvented, but they are not new.
